Challenges & Enter the Giveaway!

15 Jan

Thanks to everyone who has entered the giveaway- I am so excited to pick a winner!

It has been fun to see all the readers I didn’t even know I had- thank you and welcome to you all πŸ™‚

On Wednesday I met with my friend at pita pit… it was my first experience eating there and i was so impressed. It is sucha a cool spin on a typical ‘sub’ place. THey have options like hummus, baba ghanoush, schwarma, etc. along with the typical turkey/ham, cheese, etc. I got turkey with american swiss, avocado, and tons of veggies. It was amazing! I love how they rolled up the pita. lame picture, but you get the point.

We headed to Starbucks & I got a grande nonfat vanilla latte- I didn’t have enough exchanges in my lunch so I treated myself πŸ™‚ I was proud for doing that!

When I came home my Mom was excited because she found these at Marshalls..

I’ve never tried banana bread larabars so I was really excited- Score for Mom! haha.

I had to scramble & get ready for IOP. My IOP dinner consisted of a microwave baked potato with some light laughing cow cheese & salsa, pretzels, a pear, and a salad with tuna.

We talked about ‘activity’ at IOP and what level is appropriate at this point in our recovery. No surprise, I was a 1 meaning I can basically not have any activity besides typical day-to-day walking & what not. That is ok though, I have pretty much accepted it at this point.

After IOP, I hung out at Gardner’s. We watched the movie “Taking Woodstock” & it wasn’t really that good, but whatever. We both like the sixties so it entertained us for hte most part. I snacked on some walnuts & a Nugo bar.

I woke up to another delicious bowl of pumpkin oat bran. In this mix– 1/2 cup of oat bran/oats mixed, 1/4 cup egg beaters, 3/4 cup water, 1/3 cup pumpkin, 7 cocoa roast almonds, a banana, blueberries, 1 tbsp of this delicious hazelnut spread a la Kroger, & 1 tbsp of cinnamon raisin swirl peanut butter. Pumpkin oats are my new best friend.

Gardner came over (surprise, surprise haha) & we just goofed around. Our day looked like this: bhahah.

before I knew it, it was lunch time. Pretty standard lunch– multigrain w/ flax fat out wrap with turkey & cheese & spinach, an apple, pretzel thins, & cinnamon apple straws.

I had to meet with my nutritionist at 4:30. That went well, except she told me I am going to probalby have to increase my meal plan. That kinda stresses me out because I feel like it is already so big 😦 It depends on my weigh-in Saturday, so we’ll see.

for my snack I had an orange& banana bread larabar- if you haven’t tried this bar, do it NOW. This flavor did not disappoint.

My fam wanted to go to dinner at this sweeeet pizza place called Mellow Mushroom. I kind of was freaking out because they don’t list nutritional information, so how could i know how it fit into my meal plan? My mom assured me I could find something that worked & I asked my nutritionist about it. We figured something out. I realized that this would be a challenge for me, but recovery is about challenges. This is a good restaurant, so i am going to go, and i’m going to enjoy it. Maybe i’ll be a little over on exchanges… so what?! It won’t kill me.

I ordered a 10 inch pizza that had feta, broccoli, portobello mushrooms, roasted red pepper, and tofu. I shared it with my sister- 1/2 of the pizza would equal 4 carbs, 4 proteins, 2 fats. I needed one more carb so my nutritionist suggested starting with a cup of tomato soup- so that is what I did.

I survived- haha- and it was really good. This restaurant was soo fun! Look at the drink list- bong water?! wtfff hhaah love it.

& a huuuge Brutus πŸ™‚ too bad it wasn’t Bucky the Badger… haha

I still got in my evening snack despite the pizza! yayay. I had fage 2% mixed with cocoa powder, crunchy corn bran cereal, dark cocolate dreams, and soem cocoa roast almonds- I was in the mood for something chocolately πŸ™‚

This morning, I was still in the yogurt mood so breakfast was a big old yogurt mess with fage 2%, a banana, 1/2 cup go lean, blueberries, 1 tbsp cinnamon raisin swirl & 1 tbsp kroger hazelnut spread, & some crushed up cinnamon graham wafers- yum!

Today I am not doing too much- just getting ready to go back to school. I can’t believe I only have two days until I go back. I am so excited, anxious & READY to be back in Madison!! This break has been extremely important though. I feel like I truly have come a long way before I got here and I am so lucky to have such a supportive family who made sure I got the help I need.

I am supposed to make a comfort box for IOP since it is my last week- you put things in it that appeal to your senses so whenever you are having a bad day, you can go to the comfort box. I am trying to figure out what to put in it at the moment πŸ™‚

Sidenote, I lOVE Price is Right. I really want to be on it someday soon. My Mom & her cousin went, and my cousin got on it! It is like on my to-do list before I die- What game show would you be on if you could be on any show?

Tonight mine & gardner’s family are going out to dinner- i’m pretty anxious about where we will be going, but I have no doubt i’ll be able to figure something out!

Does “Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?” count as a game show? … Actually, scratch that. I liked it a lot better before they switched it up.

    Have fun at dinner tonight!

Banana Bread Larabars look and sound heavenly! Sadly I haven’t seen them around.. yet. I’ll find one eventually. πŸ˜‰

Haha.. Bong Water sounds disgusting and amazing at the same time. What was listed as the ingredients?

You sound like you are doing magnificent in your recovery, keep up the good work! ❀

  7. Sara K January 15, 2010 at 1:13 pm #

Great job on the eating out pizza place challenge! Sounds delicious and successful and like you really are kicking butt at recovery :)! One of the comforting things about having a meal plan in the initial stages of recovery is that you can literally fit ANYTHING you want into it which you can then translate into real life later on once you’re off the meal plan. I know increases are hard- but I actually used to get excited about them because it was even more room to experiment with different foods!
How was the banana bread Larabar? Never tried it but it sounds delicious!

  8. kbwood January 15, 2010 at 1:31 pm #

YAY FOR PIZZA! isnt it crazy how we can be so scared of somthing as innocent as crust, sauce, and cheese, and veggies? you challenged yourself and you woke up the same shelley! so proud of YOU!
did you love pita pit?! whatd you get? yum!
    go momma for the larabars!
you are going to do AWESOME at school!

  9. Michelle (Snacks and Field) January 15, 2010 at 1:37 pm #

ooh I’ve never tried Banana Bread Lara Bars- they sound soo good though!
And i lovee your pumpkin oats- I’m starting to crave them! (hmm my breakfast tomorrow!? woo!)
and it’s understandable to be a little stressed about your increasing your meal plan: but everything is going to work out and you seem like you are doing sooo well (esp. bc they didn’t have the nutritional facts at that restaurant- and you still worked around it!!!) You are having such an awesome recovery and I have no doubt that you are gonna be fine πŸ™‚

  10. Casey January 15, 2010 at 1:45 pm #

Sounds like you’re staying right on track and enjoying life at the same time!! Good for you Shelley. πŸ™‚ Banana bread LaraBars are the best, aren’t they?? Mmmm!

    yummy LARA BARS
hummus is so good I think on crackers, breads, sandwich wraps..yummy!!
i love that u add 2 tbsps of nuts butters and also bananas and all that stuff to your oats….i always feel i go overboard if my portions are so big
    need to work on that
shelley…i havent exercised now for nearly a year…and i have probably another year to go given my life right now…u have amazing strength…its so positive to see…i also love how u eat CARBS when gaining and stuff…it proves we dont need to exercise to eat carbs…i am getting tired of saddened by all these blogs that promote anti-carb…so i need to avoid them…why create more problems for myself? πŸ™‚
have a great day..and yay for the larabars! and that pizza looks delish….i cant believe u had willpower to share πŸ˜‰ ..seriously !

You have literally come so far Shelley. I remember back in the middle of the first semester, you weren’t even sure if you were going to be able to stay at school, and look at you now, you’re going back for your second semester. That is awesome. I know you still have struggles, but hang in there. πŸ™‚ love yaa

  21. Caitlin January 15, 2010 at 2:48 pm #

Hi Shelley! I’m a relatively new reader to you blog, but I REALLY like it because I can completely relate to what you’re going through on SO many levels! I love your honesty and wish you the very, VERY best as you continue to recover :).
Can I enter your giveaway even though I’m a new reader? If so, I’m definitely most thankful for my family members, who have been so supportive of me throughout all of my struggles. Keep up the awesome blog!

  22. Gabriela January 15, 2010 at 2:56 pm #

That pizza looks SO yummy…I’d never expect tofu on a pizza, but it sounds delicious! I can’t wait to go back to school, either. I love being home, but I’m ready to get back! Enjoy the rest of your break girl!

  23. seekmyself January 15, 2010 at 3:00 pm #

Girlllll your eats and strength are so amazing πŸ™‚ You’re an inspiration to so many of us girls and I know this school year is going to be awesome for you πŸ™‚

  24. Gelareh @ Orange Truffle January 15, 2010 at 3:02 pm #

The pita does look really good. I love Mellow Mushroom. Unfortunately we don’t have one here in TX… but loved it when I live in GA. I used to get the Mega Veggie Pizza.. on wheat.. oh yum!

  25. The Candid RD January 15, 2010 at 3:19 pm #

    Yeah Brutus!!!
Haha, bong water, that’s funny. Hence the name Mellow Mushroom, sounds a bit groovy and druggy to me πŸ™‚ The sign even looks sort of trippy. Are you a secret drug addict? I mean, the Mellow Mushoom AND Finding Woodstock, all in one post?! haha, jk.

I used to have fears of going to a restaurant without knowing the nutrition facts, but the bottom line is THIS; even if the nutrition facts are online or posted on the menu, are they accurate? Sometimes I feel like I can make a better guess as to the calories, and even fat, protein, carbs, in my meals, compared to the restaurant themselves. You know? It gets easier each time, I promise. Just remind yourself that you have to live life, you have to be able to go to restaurants without having total control of what you are eating, eventually, right? So you may as well start getting used to it now, and let it slowly get easier, because it will, I promise.

  26. Becca January 15, 2010 at 3:19 pm #

omg at my group on wednesday we did that as well w/ the senses! we used candles, lotion, classical music, and oranges :]
pizza looks absolutely amazing! that food has such a negative connotation and it’s really a very healthy meal. it’s simply bread, sauce, cheese, and whatever yummy veggies you put on it! just like a wrap! only it tastes better… ;]
    love,
    becca

  27. homecookedem January 15, 2010 at 4:02 pm #

I love Mellow Mushroom!! πŸ™‚ And those banana bread larabars are awesome too!!

I’d definitely be on Wheel of Fortune! I used to pretend to be Vana White when I was a kid, haha! πŸ™‚

  28. *Andrea* January 15, 2010 at 4:09 pm #

  31. Karin January 15, 2010 at 5:11 pm #

The idea of the comfort box sounds really nice. πŸ™‚
I had mixed feelings about Taking Woodstock as well but Liev Schreiber totally made that film.
Love the look of the oats by the way. So drool-worthy!
Well I’d like to be on who wants to be a millionaire? not because I’d know the answers (I’m no Slumdog ;)) but because it’s a fun show. I’m really into “basic knowledge” stuff ;).

  34. Gloria January 15, 2010 at 5:38 pm #

    Shelley,
Don’t you think it’s a cop out to put a Laughing Cow LIGHT cheese on a baked potato? I think that more normal eating would be a pat of butter or some real grated cheese. It sounds kind of diet-driven to me.

    • Shelley (findinghappinessandhealth) January 15, 2010 at 5:51 pm #

thank you for your concern. i’m not sure if you’ve had an eating disorder before, but i really am not comfortable with that yet. i am following my meal plan & my dinner calls for 2 servings of fat- i had dressing on my salad (full fat) & i had a piece of cheese on my salad. I am just trying to follow my meal plan for now, and i didn’t really want the extra fat if i didn’t need it.

      • Gloria January 15, 2010 at 6:04 pm #

I am in recovery myself and I think that you either go toward healthy eating or you stay stuck for a LOT longer. I mean, it would only have been further challenging your disordered thoughts by eating more fats. Normal eating also doesn’t involve 3 carbs, 2 fats, etc.

      • Shelley (findinghappinessandhealth) January 15, 2010 at 6:08 pm #

i eat 12 servings of fat a day..my dinner just happens to be light on the fats. i’m sorry that you don’t like my meal plan, but this program was eaten at IOP and they make sure you follow your meal plan 100%. they don’t encourage going over because they know it can make us uncomfortable. and my dinner actually had 5 servings of carbs. I feel like i’m on my road to recovery, I am gaining and i am following a plan that was given to me by a professional with years of experience. I’m sorry you may feel differently and i’d be interested to hear what your meals look like.

      • Gloria January 15, 2010 at 6:14 pm #

Well I don’t put diet foods anywhere near my plate. (That includes all foods endorsed by Hungry Girl)

  35. Gabriela January 15, 2010 at 5:51 pm #

    Hey, Shelley!
First, I wanted to say: CONGRATULATIONS!
I mean, you figured a way to have fun with your family and follow your meal plan. This is such an accomplishment!
    πŸ™‚
Awesome pics, as always. And I love your yogurt messes! They look so good πŸ˜‰
    Kisses from a brazilian girl,
    Gabriela

  36. julia January 15, 2010 at 5:55 pm #

God job! It’s so much about challenges..and please remind yourself: the meal plan is a minimum, you’ gaining: there’s no upper limit! (used to forget it too, stupid Ed…!)
    You’re doing great:)

yummy larabars! i’m glad you could find some new flavors to excite you! your outpatient program sounds so amazing.i wish i had something like that in singapore to help me out sometimes. it’s so retarded here to get help for ED since it’s not regarded as an illness so you can’t even get an insurance to cover your bills. crazy!!
hope you enjoy your last days sweetie

Girl, you are doing so great! Keep it up! Mellow Mushroom is hands down my favorite pizza place! I always get the Mega Veggie but with tempeh instead of tofu ❀ Mmm, love it! Pita pit looks really good too.

Just wondering if your nutritionist has told you an "ideal weight" for someone your height (I'm wondering for me since the internet will tell you just about anything). πŸ˜›

Have you ever had the Coconut Cream Pie lara bar? My fave! πŸ™‚

    Have a great weekend!

  51. Katie January 16, 2010 at 10:03 am #

Score on those Larabars! They really DO taste like banana bread, right?!

Good job at the pizza place. Looks delicious!

Way to beat that challenge πŸ™‚ I’m sure you’ll do great at the next restaurant!

  53. The voracious Vegan January 16, 2010 at 11:23 am #

So much good food! Your breakfast oat bowls always look ridiculously good, you’ve got such good ideas for mix ins.

The Pita Pit sounds awesome, that would totally be my favorite place to eat.

And HOORAY for you for going out to that restaurant. Not only does your food look super excellent, but it is absolutely fantastic that you are challenging yourself. You have got such a good head on your shoulders, I love it!

  54. MelissaNibbles January 16, 2010 at 1:06 pm #

Can’t wait to see what you put in the comfort box! It sounds like a fun thing.

Congrats on getting through the restaurant stress. I know that part of recovery is very difficult. Great job getting through πŸ™‚

  56. Meredith January 16, 2010 at 3:27 pm #

I’ve only been to Pita Pit once, but I really liked it too!

  57. imaginenamaste January 16, 2010 at 10:19 pm #

About to run to try to learn (haha) but PitaPit is one of my favorites–I was so sad when they closed the one at my campus to open another bar!
